Several people were killed and numerous others injured on Saturday evening after a vehicle drove into a crowd attending a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, according to local authorities.

Vancouver Police confirmed that the driver was taken into custody. Further details regarding the suspect and motive were not immediately released. Officials stated that an update would be provided at midnight (0700 GMT).

The tragic incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. local time (0300 GMT) near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party was being held.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences on the social media platform X, writing, "I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening." Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and British Columbia Premier David Eby also issued statements conveying their sorrow and support for the victims.

Witnesses reported seeing a black vehicle driving erratically in the area moments before it struck festivalgoers, according to CTV News.
Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, had been present at the event but left shortly before the crash occurred. Speaking to CTV, Singh said, "This is so horrific, I don’t even know what to say. I was just there, and I can still see the faces of the smiling and dancing children."

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident as the community mourns this devastating loss.
